An early work of his, a kind of curious tourist guide, was published in 1856; called Un romanzo in vapore: da Firenze a Livorno (A novel in steam from Florence to Leghorn), it is one of the very first examples of a literary work dedicated to the new reality of train travel (the first railway in Italy, from Naples to Portici, had opened in 1839).
